ANN ARBOR — Both Michigan State and Michigan – fans, coaches, players on both sides – say the traveling Paul Bunyan Trophy is “home” whenever their school has ownership of the trophy. Paul went to bed Saturday night wearing yellow pants, if that gives you an indication of where he’ll be taking up residence for the next year.
After a competitive first half — MSU went into the locker room down 13-7 as three-touchdown underdogs – someone unplugged the Spartan offense and snipped the cord. Despite a defensive performance that forced five field goals out of the Wolverines, MSU stumbled to just 63 yards – including 8 and no first downs in the third quarter – across the final 30 minutes of play.
The result was a 29-7 win for the Wolverines that sent MSU back home with a 3-5 record and staring at a critical November slate that’ll require three more wins for bowl eligibility. Michigan, ranked No. 4 coming into the game, remains unbeaten at 8-0.
